Ankle arthritis?? or something else?

I sprained my ankle severely in high school. I have always had pain since then. I then sprain it again years later. The Dr. told me that my ankle was weak due to the first injury. The Dr. has always thought I had arthritis, because of the way my pain was, and the swelling. Recently my ankle started swelling differently. Above my ankle on my calf. The pain has increased tremendously. I have put off going to the Dr., for fear he will say "It's the same arthritis as before" then charge me 200.00! I realize the pain will increase the older I get, but does anyone know why the swelling is now in my ankle, and CALF? Any med students out there? Anyone with the same situation? Thanks!

  1. Try a combination anti-inflamatory and pain reliever like Naproxen...Alieve, over the counter. Take 2, twice a day.

  2. you may have weakened the bone try giving self physio therapy

stretches etc type it in on google.com

  3. I'm in the situation, I sprained my ankle during high school 8 years ago twice, now I have arthritis in my left ankle, I did the surgery 2 years ago to removed a bone spurs, and going to have another one soon.  You might want to look that up, get cat scan, or MRI done, see what damage done to your joint, if you are swelling, can't sleep due to the pain, nerve tremble pain goes all the way up to your hip like me.  I suggest get a surgery done, check if you have bone spurs, loose bone and have arthritis cleaned. It will reduce mass amount of pain, but only temporary maybe good for couple years depends on your activities, might need to fuse or an ankle replacement in the future when you reach 40 or 50 yrs old, so get it done asap and start recovery by stretching.  Go buy some Epsom salt at CVS, soak your ankle with 1/2 cup of epsom salt with warm water for 15 mins a day that'll reduce some pain before you go to sleep.  check my source. and good luck ! !
