Question:

Ankle pain during/after running?

I have read through many of other questions on Yahoo about ankle pain while running, and I can't seem to find anything that will explain the reason I am feeling the pain I am.

First off I want to let you know that I just recently started working out about 2 weeks ago, and started running at about the same time. I haven't been running a lot, but I do try to do it everyday...sometimes it could be considered more of a jog.

I started experiencing ankle pain the other night while running, but it went away shortly after I built up some speed. Well last night I started running, and it hurt (badly) and the pain wouldn't go away, so I only ran a really short distance because the pain was so uncomfortable.

What might be the cause of this? Is it because I am new to running and haven't built up enough strength in my ankles to support me? Or could it be something like I need a new pair of shoes?

Just want some thoughts and opinions on this, thanks!

  1. Wear running shoes.  The wrong kind of shoes like basketball shoes or flat soled shoes will ruin your feet.  Also stretch obviously.  Perhaps your running technique puts a lot of shock on your ankles as well. Try running on a track as opposed to streets.  Im not sure how old you are, but you may also just be growing.  I had terrible pain in my heels and ankle area when on the track team and it was due to growing...my bones were getting long and the muscles and tendons were stretching out and gave me tendonitis.  Good Luck!

  2. There are many reasons for this that include your shoes, your form, and your body type (hips mostly).  Make sure you have the proper running form for the type of running you are doing and make sure that you have good running shoes.  Mine have been hurting a lot too since I started running, but I have been working on my form and also doing a lot of stretching (rotate your ankles, etc.), and that seems to have helped quite a bit.
