Question:

Ankles hurt when running?

I've just recently started running and my ankles hurt like crazy. It's not a pain like I sprained them they just hurt. It really feels like there isn't enough blood getting to them and they also turn really red. I was thinking maybe I just need to stretch more before and after I run, but I don't really know what stretches to do. What do you think?

  1. Pain in the ankles is usually caused from your shoes.  Even if they are brand new, your shoes may not fit your feet well.  Second Sole is a great place for shoes, they will show you where the shoe fits and does not, and how it affects your feet, ankles, etc.  The ankle roll stretch and icing it should help too.

  2. It could be that you just started running so your ankles aren't used to it yet.  Just keep at it and the pain should go away.  If it continues for more than a week though you should talk to either  your coach or your doctor.

  3. are you doing long or short distance running?

i don't know about long distance, but i hurdle and my ankles started hurting and i later found out it was because i was landing wrong.

once again, for short distance, stick to your training shoes and not your spikes, because they have little support.

i just started wrapping my ankles, which helped me.

have an athletic trainer do it for you, i learned by watching after a few times, the wrap also went around the sole of my foot into some my arch.

    good luck!
