Anna Chakvetadze storms past Cagla Buyukakcay into the main round – Tashkent Open 2012
World number 261, Anna Chakvetadze, recorded an upset against the 187th ranked Turk professional, Cagla Buyukakcay, in the final qualifying round of the Tashkent Open on Monday. She won the first set comprehensively
6-1 but lost the second phase tie-breaker 6-7(3). However, the final battle was clinched easily by the Russian star winning it 6-1 to march into the main round of the contest.
It was a terrific start from both contestants. However, the Russian former world number five stepped up the tempo with a breakthrough in the third game and continued to exert pressure on her rival; protected the breakpoint with
a serve hold and stole another breakthrough to mount a stupendous lead of 4-1. She wasn’t tested at all on her serve in the following game but squeezed the third successive breakpoint in the seventh game to name the first set proceedings in her favour.
The second set witnessed a very tight battle between the two athletes. No drama was witnessed until the end of the fourth game. However, the much wanted breakpoint was won by the 22-year-old Turk who stepped ahead of her rival
in the second set.
Buyukakcay was serving for the set in the 10th game but failed to hold on and gifted the critical breakthrough to her rival. Chakvetadze held her nerve and bagged the serve hold; so did her rival. A tie-breaker round
witnessed an early mini-break for the Turk who clasped the win and enforced the final set into play.
The Russian commenced the final set with a bang; winning four games on the trot courtesy a couple of breakpoints that helped her to name the initial half of the set. The Turk was unable to respond to this magnificent onslaught
and just managed to squeeze a single serve hold before her rival sneaked the third breakpoint in the final game of the match to stay alive in the tournament.
The qualifiers are yet to be placed in the main round draw so Chakvetadze still awaits the announcement of her first round contestants. However, the possibilities are that she might get Alexandra Cadantu, Magdalena Rybarikova,
Eleni Daniilidou, Galina Voskoboeva or Lesia Tsurenko.
