Ninth seed, Anna Danilina, received a cracking upset at the hands of the local challenger, Victoria Duval in the quarter-finals at the Flushing Meadows taking place in New York, United States. Duval juggled up
a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph against the Kazakh native and gleefully marched into the semi-finals of the US Open Girls’ Singles category.
The 16-year-old American showed brilliant skills to out gun her higher ranked opponent in a close encounter. She boldly drew the first blood right away and consequently swiped the initial two games, stamping
her 2-0 lead. Duval advanced without any break, evening out the score line twice, in the fourth and the sixth game respectively. She successfully clinched the last three games and sealed set with a 6-3 score.
The world number 473rd Danilina had a low first serve percentage of 34 and she bagged away six of 11 points. The American easily secured 69 percent first serve accuracy, converting 14
of 20 points in the opener.
The contest shifted momentum in the following set, as the American candidate was unable to sustain her former lead. The Kazakh stepped forward to break her rival’s serve three times in the set and swiped her
remaining serves with solid resolve to grab the set with a 6-3 score line.
In the decider, the 17-year-old Kazakh lost her initial thrust and the right-hander local managed for a breakthrough in the fourth game, bagging all the remaining games in the set to conclude victory at 6-2.
The Kazakh double faulted five times but both contestants had a slightly similar first serve precision of 63 percent and she attained all the two break points offered to her. However, Duval managed to convert
nine of 13 points and impressively marked 27 winning points.
The next challenge for Duval will be the 12th seeded Estonian native, Anett Kontaveit. She gave the top seeded American, Taylor Townsend a straight sets shocker by 6-4, 6-4.
The American contender will have to face a tough challenge if she aims to seek the winner’s trophy. She also contested against the 23rd seeded Belgian tennis ace Kim Clijsters in the first
round of the US Open. Nonetheless, her persistence is surely the most extraordinary attribute in her personality and can surely facilitate her to upset all odds
