Anna-Lena Groenefeld, Ahsha Rolle move into main draw 2011 Internationaux de Strasbourg
Number nine seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld eased past Italian Anna Floris 6-0, 6-2 in the final qualifying round match of 2011 Internationaux de Strasbourg in France.
The German tennis-pro looked to attack right from the start. In the opening set she broke serve three times and made her opponent’s strategy look completely ineffective.
The challenger had no answers to Groenefeld’s well placed shots as she dropped only 4 out 28 points in the set to take the 1-0 lead in the set score.
Floris put up a good fight in the set set and managed to win a couple of her service games. However, the momentum remained with Groenefeld as she broke the serve twice again to wrap up the match after only 48 minutes of play.
With her accurate and powerful serves, the German created all sorts of problems for her opponent. Her first serve conversion was an impressive 63 per cent while she claimed 67 per cent of the points on serve return to establish
her control over the contest.
Groenefeld also earned crucial serve ace points with her blistering serves. Floris struggled to time the ball and committed a number of unforced errors. She adopted defensive strategy and paid the price for her mistakes. The Italian
managed to win only 36 per cent of the points on her first serve which played a big part in deciding the outcome of the match.
Ranked 212th in the world, Groenefeld is having a decent time on the Women’s Tennis Association tour this season. She has emerged victorious in nine out fifteen matches she has played so far. She will be looking to continue
her good form throughout the tournament and claim the second WTA title of her career. Floris would be disappointed with her effort. She looked in great touch in her opening two matches at the clay courts tournament but lost the plot when it most mattered.
In another match American Ahsha Rolle of United States stunned compatriot second seed Christina McHale 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to book her place in the main draw of the WTA event.
Rolle made the first serve break of the match in fourth game of the opening set. She held on to her serve games quite comfortably to clinch the opener 7-5. McHale made a strong come back in the second set and broke the serve twice
to level the set score.
However, Rolle regrouped herself and showed remarkable determination in the decider as she came back from behind to earn a deserving victory. She will face Lucie Hradecka of Czech Republic in her next match-up.
