Anna Schmiedlova cripples Antonia Lottner to enter final round – Girls’ Singles French Open 2012
Slovakian starlet, Anna Schmiedlova, devastated the British contestant, Antonia Lottner, with a breadstick at the Girls’ Singles Roland Garros 2012 on Friday. She juggled up a 7-5, 6-1 victory against the world number 924 to breeze into the final showdown
at this second of the four Grand Slam event taking place from 22nd may to 10th June in Paris.
Schmiedlova lost her serve twice but capitalised on five out of nine break chances to pull out the victory in straight sets. After bagging this match in one hour and 16 minutes, the Slovak enthusiastically progressed into the title-round at this major red
clay court tournament.
The 17-year-old made a strong entry into the Court number Three and broke the Brit’s serve in the sixth game to jump to a 4-2 lead. Despite losing the following three games, she capitalised on another break chance in the 10th game and levelled
the scores at 5-5. Schmiedlova got the breakthrough in the last game and sealed the set by winning seven games to five.
Ranked 396th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Schmiedlova went out of control in the following set. She blasted powerful groundstrokes to reel off the opening five games in a row before the 15-year-old could hold on. The
Slovak held her serve once again and pulled out the set with a breadstick.
Summing up the Slovak’s performance in this duel, Schmiedlova produced a slightly better first serve share of 62 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 60 per cent and impressively availed 24 out of 41 points on it. She also capitalised fully the many unforced
errors Lottner spilled.
Next challenge for Schmiedlova is second seeded Annika Beck who stomped over the Estonian challenger, Anett Kontaveit, in straight sets to set up this final battle.
The German seed was broken three times but cashed in six out of 17 break chances, eventually sealing the deal with a 6-3, 6-3 success in almost an hour. She clobbered an amazing first serve share of 79 per cent as compared to her opponent’s 57 per cent and
marked 27 out of 42 points on it.
