Anna Schmiedlova ousts Domenica Gonzalez in Girls’ Singles 1st round – US Open 2011
16 Seeded Anna Schmiedlova clashed against un-seeded Domenica Gonzalez in the opening draw of the US Open 2011 junior girls’ tournament. As the two met for the first time they were unfamiliar with each other’s game play and battled
it out on show court 9 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Slovakian Schmiedlova won in straight sets of 6-2, 7-6(3) in just 76 minutes.
Domenica Gonzalez is a 15 year-old Ecuadorian player and is currently ranked 26 in juniors. Although, she won no titles this year, she still managed to enter into fifteen tournaments and won 14 matches. Her most notable performance
this year was when she made it to the quarter finals of the Astrid Bowl, 2011.
On the contrary, Anna Schmiedlova is currently ranked at 23 in juniors and is a Slovakian national. This year she entered into eighteen tournaments and played a total of fifty one matches, out of which she has won thirty five.
The highlight of the year was when she won the Slovakia Cup 2011.
The court was set and serving first was the sixteen seeded Slovak, who was broken in the first game by Gonzalez and by holding her serve in the second game Gonzalez took the lead at 2-0. However, the Slovak was not to be left behind
and quickly won on her serve in the third game and in the fourth broke her Ecuadorian adversary to balance the score at 2-2. Winning on her serve in the fifth game, she then went on to break Gonzalez again in the sixth game. She held her serve for the last
time in the seventh game and broke the un-seeded Gonzalez in the eighth game to an en-route victory of the opening set.
During the first set neither of the players had struck an ace or a winner and instead both had committed unforced errors and double faults. However, Schmiedlova had managed to hit 53% of her first serves on target and by capitalizing
on 43% of break points won; she bagged the first set with 38 points.
After taking a beating in the first set Gonzalez had learnt her lesson and eventually in the second took a notch higher in her performance as she forced the set into a tie breaker.
Opening the second set was Schmiedlova who smashed an ace at 40-15 to secure a speeding opening game. In the following ten games the players kept winning on their own serves and the score was tied at 5-5. In the eleventh game Gonzalez
was first to break but not wanting to throw all the hard work to waste, Schmiedlova broke her opponent and pushed the set to a tie breaker. Schmiedlova was not ready to throw the gauntlet and fought a blow for a blow but eventually she raced past the Ecuadorian
as she took the lead when she aced for the second time.
Slovak Anna Schmiedlova was a stronger player amongst the two and will now be facing un-seeded Kyle Mc Phillips of America.
