Anna Tatishvili defeats Sorana Cirstea in the second round – US Open 2012
22-year-old Anna Tatishvili trounced Sorana Cirstea in the second round of the US Open 2012, held on the hard courts of Corona Park in Queens, New York City. The Georgian summed up the match with 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2 win on Tuesday.
The Romanian semi-finalist of the Texas Tennis Open this year started journey with a strong resolve to outcast all her over-powering odds at the Grand Slam event. She commenced the set with her remarkable initial serve but was unable to pocket any game intially. The Georgian tennis professional grabbed the opportunity and clenched the initial two games in the opening set.
Both contenders tried their utmost to secure the lead in the set. The Tatishvili displayed an excellent action plan throughout the set and snatched two out of four break points to get the upper hand. She unleashed her fury and smashed high-paced ground strokes, equalizing the scores to 6-all. After the tie-breaker round between the two rivals, Cirstea took the opening set at 7-6(5) to get one up in the contest.
In the second set, the world number 38 tried her best to stomp over her opponent. Although she was unable to sting any break points in the entire set, she maintained her strong focus and proceeded with her rhythm. Tatishvili did not let her rival rally past her and lost merely a single game in the set. Due to her weak serves, the Romanian tennis star could not play at ease and bagged away her loss by 1-6.
The 73rd ranked, Tatishvili tried shifting the momentum and never received a break opportunity. However, it was very evident that Cirstea had lost her initial sparking momentum. Her scores rest on peacefully after the fifth game and this gave the Georgian a 3-2 lead in the decider. Ultimately, she took a step forward and cruised to a 6-2 win, entering the second round of the US Open.
Although the 22-year-old Georgian coughed double faults eight times in the match, she had an improved first serve percentage of 72. She won six out of 13 breaks of serve in the entire match. On the other hand, her rival smashed five aces and double faulted four times. However, she had an average first serve percentage of 56 and convert two of the 13 serve breaks presented to her
Tatishvili will be contesting against Mandy Minella in the third round of the Grand Slam.
