Anna Tatishvili undoes Anastasia Pivovarova in the opening round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Georgian number one, Anna Tatishvili beat all odds to overcome world number 112, Anastasia Pivovarova of Russia in the opening round of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships, being played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Clun
in Wimbledon, London. The 21-year-old Georgian took down the Russian after an intriguing three-set matchup, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in an hour and 55 minutes to clinch the opening round match.
The Georgian used her powerful serve and forehand to outplay Pivovarova in three enthralling sets. However, there was a first set scare for the world number 118, but she dug deep to reverse the score in the remaining two sets to
nab a three-set victory for herself.
A fine performance from the Georgian and continuous resistance from Pivovarova made this a worthwhile match for the British crowd. Tatishvili sewed up the match with her glamorous swinging serves and as usual, her rigidness which
proved too much for the Russian. Nevertheless, it was a decent effort from the Russian, who managed to beat the Georgian in the first set of the match.
The match started promisingly, with Tatishvili taking the first break of serve to go 2-3 in the first set. Clever play from Tatishvili and a couple of miss-hits from the Russian meant this match displayed all the promise of a comfortable
passage into the second round for the Georgian. However, the 21-year-old Pivovarova began to play with much more power and consolidated on a break of serve to go 3-3.
From that point onward, the set was very much in favour of Pivovarova, and Tatishvili remained unable to show any fight on the court. Continuing her ascent, the Russian managed to break the Georgian in the ninth game to go one
up in the set score.
But one does not make it as the top Georgian tennis player for nothing, in the following two sets there was a whisper of comeback for Tatishvili. Pivovarova briefly looked to be overwhelmed by the possibly that laid before her
and began to miss the big shots, meaning Tatishvili was able to claw her way in and clinched the last two sets in an hour and sixteen minutes.
Up next for Georgian is the Belgian No.2, Yanina Wickmayer in the second round of tournament. The Belgian has made a meal of Tatishvili in their prior two meetings, and their head-to-head series stands at 2-0 in Wickmayer’s favour.
