Anna Tatishvili upsets Jelena Dokic in first round of Family Circle Cup
Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of qualifier Anna Tatishvili, who hails from Georgia. Dokic was upset by the player in three set 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Tatishvili took a little over two hours
and twenty minutes to oust her opponent.
Anna Tatishvili is currently ranked just outside the World’s Top 100 Women’s Tennis Association players at Number 115. The Georgian player is 21 years old, and resides in Florida, USA. She has not yet turned pro officially, but
is quickly becoming a constant fixture on the tennis circuit. She is a right-handed player, and has won eleven of the eighteen matches she played so far this year.
Dokic, on the other hand, is one of the most experienced players on the WTA Tour. Currently ranked World Number 64, she is 27years old and has been playing tennis in a professional capacity since 1998. The right-handed pro lives
in Monte Carlo, Monaco and has a total of six titles under her belt. She managed to win one of these titles earlier this year.
Tatishvili and Dokic played a very unpredictable match, with both players volleying back and forth to challenge each other again and again. Although Tatishvili scored less aces than her opponent, she also committed just three double
faults whereas Dokic seemed to make mistake after mistake to commit ten such errors. However, both players managed to break each other an equal number of times, which resulted in the basic competitive nature of the meeting. Tatishvili fired off a signature
backhand to take the last of 208 points, winning 51 per cent to take the match 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
This is the second time that Anna Tatishvili has been able to defeat Jelena Dokic. Their first encounter took place last year at the Rome Tiro A Volo event in Italy, in the round of the last 32 on clay. Tatishvili recovered from
a set down to defeat her opponent with a bagel in the third set. Their head to head record is now 2-0 for the Georgian pro.
Anna Tatishvili will face ninth seed Maria Kirilenko in the second round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup.
