Anna Tatishvili upsets Urszula Radwanska in the final qualifier – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 79, Anna Tatishvili, scored a win against the 21-year-old Pole, Urszula Radwanska, in the final qualifier of the Rogers Cup tournament at Montreal, Canada. She dumped her in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to reach the main
round of the tournament. However, the Radwanska wasn’t deprived of the spot in the first round of the tournament having being chosen as a lucky loser.
The 46th ranked Pole started off with a serve hold to love and grabbed the following four points as well to register the first breakthrough of the match. However, she couldn’t sustain the lead for long and was thumped
back to level terms courtesy to a breakthrough for the Georgian starlet in the third game and a comfortable serve hold in the following.
Both players hung on to their serves in the following four games to push the scores at 4-4. It looked like the Pole starlet will inch the opening set because she was dominating the show but an onslaught from her rival powered her
down to a breakpoint in the crucial stage of the match. She couldn’t win a single point on her serve in the ninth game and a comfortable serve hold for Tatishvili helped her post a lead of one set in the match.
The second set was pure class and domination from the 22-year-old Georgian who gusted away her rival with three successive breakthroughs and comfortable serve holds at the other end. The Georgian smashed an ace and coupled it with
some mind startling winners to win the match with a tally of 58 points.
Radwanska had earlier played her second qualifier in the same day and looked tired in this battle. She had a long day but was awarded with a lucky loser status that will help her book a first round spot in the tournament.
Tatishvili hopes to get an easy draw in the main round so that she can advance towards the title at the 1000 points tournament. However, the likes of the Top-10 players will definitely make her life difficult if she fall victim
to one of them in the first round draw.
