Anna Tovsta dominates Women’s 400m IM final - 2011 World Deaf Swimming Championships
Ukraine’s Anna Tovsta demonstrated her talented skills in front of the arena, by dominating the final of Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) category on the first day of the 3rd World Deaf Swimming Championships on Sunday, August 7, in Coimbra,
Portugal. Tovsta also improved the world record of the event in the meet.
The championship is a long course event, scheduled by the international aquatic sport’s governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Tovsta claimed the gold medal of the distant IM event, by submitting a record thrashing time of 5 minutes and 05.31 seconds. Her time was 2.90 seconds under the Deaf World Record of 5 minutes and 08.21 seconds, made by He Yue Yue of China in 2009. With her
immaculate effort, she also improved her own championship record of 5 minutes and 16.09 seconds, set by Tovsta in the preliminary rounds of 400m event at these World Championships.
The Ukrainian athlete was trailed by Jarmila Gupta of Germany, who won the silver medal in a time of 5 minutes and 18.04 seconds. Gupta was 3.86 seconds ahead of her team-member, Linda Neumann, who settled on the medal rostrum for third position, by clocking
a time of 5 minutes and 21.90 seconds.
Meanwhile, the bronze medallist was 0.71 seconds ahead of Celeste Maria Punet, who earned fourth fastest spot of the respective meet in a time of 5 minutes and 22.61 seconds. Maria Kalimina of Russia emerged as the fifth fastest finisher of the eight-lap
event, by touching the wall in 5 minutes and 25.45 seconds.
She was followed by Ayaka Fujikawa of Japan, who remained prominently away from fifth position holder and posted 5 minutes and 27.59 seconds for sixth place. The last two spots of the exhausting event were obtained by Tovsta’s team-members, Kateryna Ivanenko
and Kateryna Avramenko, who settled as the seventh and eighth position holders, with timings of 5:41.90 and 5:49.84 minutes, respectively.
After the completion of the swimming event, medals and accolades were awarded to winners for their scintillating performances in the meet.
