Anna Vaughan wins heat as Cecila Zorzi leads overall standings: Laser 4.7 Girls World Championship
Anna Vaughan, a teenager from Australia, made history when she clinched the ninth heat of 2011 Laser 4.7 Girls World Championship in San Francisco. The 15-year-old member of Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania
Dinghy Group and Tasmania Sailing Academy sailed tremendously in the ninth heat to get the better of her opponents. However, in the overall standings, she is at number 40 while Cecila Zorzi leads overall.
Cecila Zorzi, on the other hand, finished in first place overall with successive heat victories during the regatta. She had a superb sail under favourable wind conditions to claim the top spot with
five heat victories at 15 points.
Vaughan sailed in ideal weather conditions at San Francisco bay. She is one of the lightest sailors of the women’s fleet. Her best finish was at number 31 but in this race she moved from 49th
place to 40th after finishing first in the ninth heat.
Speaking to the local media Anna Vaughan’s father, Michael Vaughan said, “As I helped her wheel the boat down the ramp this morning we discussed tactics and she said 'I'm going for broke.if there
is anyone going to be OCS'd today, it will be me. She then picked the less favoured mark to round at the gate and lost several places, but fought back again on the second beat to windward”
He added, “We have one day's sailing left and I think Anna will follow her tactics of today. She can outsail me, too. Winning a heat of a world championship is a great feat for any sailor and I'm
very proud of her effort today.”
