Annalisa Bona ousts Eva Fernandez-Brugues in the final qualifier – Barcelona Ladies Open 2012
Italian professional, Annalisa Bona, thrashed the local representative, Eva Fernandez-Brugues, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to progress into the main round of the Barcelona Ladies Open. She crushed her opponent in just over an hour
to register her second head-to-head triumph.
It was a complete one-sided encounter to say the least. The visitor had locked all corners of the court and was not allowing her opponent to build up any sort of momentum into her play. She won an early break to register a lead
of 2-0 and enhanced it with another breakthrough in the fourth game to reach the scores of 4-0.
It was getting pretty ominous for the local who left the crowd dejected. She tried hard to bounce back into the contest, won a couple of breakpoints but wasn’t able to repeat make use of the serve games.
The second set saw the repeat play of the first. Both players swapped breakpoints at the start but not before the Italian had held her serve to take a lead. Scores were 4-2 when the second serve hold was witnessed at the Red Clay
courts of Barcelona. It was high time for the Spaniard to hold her serve for the first time in the match to boost her chances but she failed to do so; handing over the victory to her opponent.
Bona will shortly know her draw on Monday eve. She will have to work hard in order to put a stunning display in the first round of the tournament. The draw is very tough with big guns fired up to have a strong thumping start to
their clay court campaign.
In another final qualifier, the 204th ranked Ukrainian, Yuliya Beygelzimer, stunned the sixth seed Slovenian, Petra Rampre, to march on into the main round draw of the tournament. She will join in the likes of Aravane
Rezai of France and Laura Thorp of France in the main round of the tournament. All these players fought all the way from the opening round qualifiers to make their way into the opening round of the tournament. It sets up an exciting draw for the upcoming days.
