Anne of Green Gables & Prince Edward Island?

O.K., so I know this is akin to taking a "Sound of Music Tour" in Salzburg, but I would love to visit some of the places where Anne of Green Gables was filmed in Canada. I've loved that movie since I was little and I've always wanted to go there. Any advice for a traveler? Where to stay? How to get there? Other activities? Time of year? Thanks!

  1. Nearly all of the movie was filmed outside of Prince Edward Island (mostly in Ontario). However, PEI has an abundance of 'Anne' sights and sites... and is well worth the visit to see where LM Montgomery drew her inspiration. Some TV/film based on other of her books has much more actual Island footage, and I believe the New Moon series was entirely filmed on PEI.

    Things to see on PEI:

Anne of Green Gables, the musical

    Anne and Gilbert, the musical

Anne of Green Gables house and walking trails

    LM Montgomery birth place

Cousin's Shore is a beach frequently used in filming

Cabot Park is where some New Moon footage is taken from

I rarely recommend Avonlea Village, but if Anne is really your thing you may enjoy it - mostly shops with some impromtu Anne perfomances in the streets.

Go in the summer... And I mean right in the middle of the summer. The Island has a short period of good weather, and most tourist attractions are open only from early/mid June until Labor Day weekend. You'll most likely want to rent a car once there to get around as there is no public transit.

  2. Why not visit go to the actual inspiration for it all in Cavendish County PEI. The farmhouse and the haunted woods that are in the book are actually there. The film(s) ( yes there have been a few), are  just an adaptation from the book that Montgomery wrote. Which adaptation are you asking about?

  3. Much of the movie was filmed outside of PEI so if you're going there expecting it to be the same, you'll be dissappointed.  PEI is the location for the story because it is where the author grew up.  So, I'd go to PEI if your interested in the history of the story but check out the movie locations if that is what you're more into.
