Annika Beck breezes past Anett Kontaveit for final berth – Girls’ Singles Roland Garros 2012
Second seed, Annika Beck, got the better of the Estonian contestant, Anett Kontaveit, in straight sets at the Girls’ Singles French Open 2012 on Friday. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the world number 418 to secure a place in the final showdown
at this second of the four Grand Slam events held in France.
The German starlet showed top class performance to outsmart Kontaveit in their second meeting at this prestigious clay court event. The contestants last fought each other at the qualifying competition of e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open in Copenhagen and after
earning this success, Beck maintained her winning record against the 16-year-old.
The 18-year-old made a strong entry into the Court number Three and drew the first blood in the third game to jump to a 2-1 lead. She lost her edge in the very next game but wiped out the proceeding three games in a row with two breaks of serve, eventually
leaping to a 5-2 lead. Despite losing her serve in the eighth game, Beck held her serve once more and clicked the opener with a 6-3 win.
Ranked 164th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Beck maintained her intensity in the follow-up set and earned the desiderated break in the second game to get the upper hand. Apart from losing her serve in the very next game,
the German broke her rival’s serve once again and leaped to a 4-1 lead. She then held her remaining serves with self-assurance and carved out the victory with a 6-3 score line.
All in all, the ultra-fit German outshined her opponent completely in this hour-long battle. She penned down a higher first serve share of 79 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 57 per cent and superbly marked 27 out of 42 points on it. She also sought 17
break opportunities and spilled fewer errors to dominate the match.
Next in line for Beck is the Slovakian challenger, Anna Schmiedlova, who shocked several seeds en route to final. The Slovak upset 13th seeded Daria Gavrilova, top seeded Taylor Townsend and fifth seeded Katerina Siniakova before crushing Antonia
Lottner with a breadstick in the semi-finals.
