Annika Beck survives scare against Mandy Minella; Begu ousted in Bad Gastein – Tennis News

German star, Annika Beck, crawled her way back in game and ultimately overpowered the Luxembourgian challenger, Mandy Minella, in a three-set thriller at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2013 on Thursday. The third seeded Irina-Camelia
Begu on the other hand became casualty of the day. She bowed out to Yvonne Meusburger in brutal straight sets at this WTA International level event being held in Bad Gastein, Austria.

Seeded second in this event, Beck made a dismal start and went 2-6, 2-4 down. However, she turned the tables on her rival after this and eventually sealed the deal with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 score line.

The beaming German was quoted in an on-court interview after pocketing the match, “It was a tough one. I was down a set and a break and I had to take a medical timeout because my nose was bleeding. I don't know how that happened,
but it could be because of the altitude. I hope it doesn't come back tmorrow.Mandy played a great match. She had good tactics. I made too many easy mistakes, but I tried to find my rhythm and eventually I did. I'm pretty happy I came out on top."

After breaking her rival’s serve twice, the Luxembourgian cruised to a 4-1 lead. Despite losing her serve in the sixth game, Minella capitalised on another break opportunity and subsequently sealed the opener by winning six games
to two.

Beck failed to seek her momentum in the following set and after suffering the first blow in the fifth game, she went 2-4 down. However, she stayed calm and not only recovered in the eighth game but also got the breakthrough in
the last game, eventually grabbing the equaliser with a 6-4 win.

In the deciding set, the seed maintained consistency in her game. She got the coveted break in the fourth game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Beck lost her edge in the proceeding game but took lead again in the eighth game. Regardless
of losing her serve in the ninth game, she stayed focused and clinched the decider with a 6-4 score line.

Elsewhere, the third seeded Begu was underplayed by the local challenger. However, it was not a surprise as Meusburger has reached the final eight of this event every time she participated. The Austrian is bidding to level her
best record at this event of reaching semi-finals in 2007. In addition to this, Meusburger is in great run of form as she slaughtered her opponent with double bagels in the opening round.
