Annika Sorenstam gives birth to third child-Golf
40-year-old, Swedish born golfer, Annika Sorenstam gave birth to her third child on Monday. She confirmed the news through her twitter account and said, “SURPRISE! I went into labour today & William Nicholas McGee was born at 6:33 PM. I am well. Will is hanging in there fine for being 27 weeks.”
Sorenstam, who married Mike McGee on January 10, 2009, announced retirement soon after from Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour in 2008. She gave birth to her first child, daughter Ava Madelyn McGee on September 1, 2009.
The winner of 72 LPGA events was expecting the child three months from now, but had to rush to the hospital before time. She gave birth to a healthy child and tweeted the good news at 7:44 p.m.
Sorenstam is known as one of the most successful golfers on the LPGA tour. She started her professional career in 1992 and won 93 international tournaments. In addition to that, she holds 72 titles, which includes ten major title victories.
She won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2001, 2002 and 2005. During the same period, the Swedish golfer triumphed thrice at the LPGA Championship. In 2006, she claimed her hat trick at the U.S. Women’s Open, when she won the play-off match against Pat Hurst. Her sole Women's British Open triumph took place in 2003, when she hammered one-stroke victory over Se Ri Pak.
The dual nationality holder has won eight player of the year accolades, which explains her prowess with golf clubs. Sorenstam was part of eight Solheim Cups and was known for earning the highest points in the event.
Moreover, she holds the credit for being the first woman to compete against men in Bank of America Colonial tournament in 2003.
Sorenstam announced retirement in 2008 May and participated in her last professional event that took place in Dubai. She finished seventh in Dubai Ladies Masters and bid adieu to golf.
However, ties that bind her with golf remain strong as she continues to be part of charities such as, Make-A-Wish foundation that support amateur golfers.
