Annika Sorenstam on Augusta’s historic move
The historic Augusta National Golf Club has admitted two women to its members. LPGA’s Hall of Fame member Annika Sorenstam commented on the event in a recent article.
She started the article with praise for the golf course and said that this was an excellent move that will further enhance the reputation of the club.
Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore are the two women who were admitted to the Augusta National Golf Club this August. The move came as a surprise to many observers who have grown used to the exclusive status of the club.
The club was established in 1933 and has retained its statues of an exclusive golf community. It has come under fire on several occasions because of its controversial policies.
The first of these controversies arose when it refused to admit black members. It was not until 1990 that the first black member was admitted to the club.
The club had a long standing rule of no women members that it defended over years. Citing its status as a private club, Augusta National Golf Club successfully evaded women members despite several occasions of public outcry.
It all changed in August 2012, when the current Chairman of the club, William “Billy” Payne announced that Former Secretary of State, Ms. Condoleezza Rice and business tycoon Darla Moore will be given memberships of the club.
In the words of Annika Sorenstam, this excellent move will go a long way in supporting the game of golf and improving its status as a game for both genders.
She added that ever since she played a few rounds at the club, it was her sincere wish that women should be allowed to join the club.
Sorenstam was of the opinion that the two women chosen for the honour represent the very best among the female golfers.
Both have progressed to the top of their chosen professions and are now considered the best at what they do. These two women are also avid golfers who will prove to be a great addition to the club’s roster.
The Masters tournament will take place next year and this move will add a completely new dimension to the upcoming event.
