Annika Sorenstam refuses to lead Europe at 2013 Solheim Cup
Annika Sorenstam has reportedly refused the offer to lead Europe at 2013 Solheim Cup, saying she has decided to give others the chance to work on the team.
The European team is scheduled to play against its long-time rival the United States next year.
However, Sorenstam’s decision to reject the captaincy of the European team has not created any trouble for the tournament officials.
The 41-year-olf Swedish star has been one of the greatest players in women’s golf. However, she said that she has her reasons to stay out of the captaincy of Europe.
Speaking to media following her decision, Sorenstam said she knows the Solheim Cup is one of most prestigious events, but she does not think she is capable of leading a team of competent players.
"I simply cannot provide the necessary time that the European team, Solheim family and the entire event deserves," she said.
Although out of professional golf since the last 3 years, Sorenstam has been reluctant to give full to golf.
Sorenstam is a mother of two children and paying attention to her private life has kept her off the course for months.
She was given the offer to lead Europe in the 2013 Cup because of her amazing performance in the past events. She represented Europe 8 times, recording 24 points.
Now that she has passed on the responsibility of captaincy to other players, she thinks that she will be able to lead the team in the future.
She stated, "The Solheim Cup has been an important part of my career, and I hope to one day lead the European team".
The Solheim Cup is a biennial event just like the Ryder Cup, and typically features 12-player teams from Europe and the United States. Players for the teams are selected through the points system.
Last year, Europe outplayed the United States, bringing the number of victories in the Cup to 4.
However, according to the history of the Cup, United States have maintained a clear ascendancy over their European rivals. Of the total 12 tournaments staged so far, Americans have grabbed 8 victories.
By hoisting the 2011 Cup played from September 23 to September 25 at Killeen Castle, Ireland, Europe finally ended their 3-year winning drought.
