Annika Sorenstam to make rare appearance at Pebble Beach Invitational
Annika Sorenstam, the 40-year-old Swedish golfer who has 72 LPGA Tour titles including 10 major championships, will tee it up at the Pebble Beach Invitational this week in a rare appearance
at a pro tournament.
The $300,000 annual event is contested over four days at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, and the Del Monte Golf Course and features players from the PGA Tour, the LPGA Tour, the
Champions Tour, and the Nationwide Tour. It is a 72-hole stroke-play event.
Sorenstam's last victory came at the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in October 2008 in Sweden. And her last victory on the LPGA Tour was a dominant seven-stroke win over four players at the
Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill in May 2008. Shortly after the Michelob, she announced that 2008 would be her final season. Her final appearance at a professional tournament was at the Dubai Ladies Masters in December 2008, where she finished T7.
Since then, she has played in a few charity and invitational tournaments, most recently at the Mission Star Trophy in China, where she finished T12.
Mark Brooks will return to Pebble Beach to defend his title, which he won by birdying his final three holes to finish two shots ahead of D.A. Points and Rickie Fowler. Brooks, a seven-time
winner on tour, will be joined by 12 other tour players. Ryan Palmer, who won this year’s Sony Open, finished 17th on the money list and is the top-ranked PGA Tour player in the field.
Joining Sorenstam will be Juli Inkster, the only woman to have won this event, beating the field in the 1990 edition. Seven other LPGA players, including Morgan Pressel, will tee it up
at Pebble Beach.
Tommy Armour III and Scott Simpson are two of the eight Champions Tour players in the field while Jamie Lovemark, who finished at the top of the Nationwide Tour money list, will be joined
by 17 other Nationwide Tour players.
The low-40 after Saturday’s third round qualify for the final round on Sunday.
