Question:

Annoying trade that's making me want to break something. Pass or veto?

I'm a mod in a 12-team keeper league (h2h POINTS) and this trade has just been accepted: Jay Bruce for Adam Dunn & Jorge Cantu.

First of all i can't believe it was the guy who wanted Bruce was the one who proposed it and was willing to give up 40hrs -100rbi.

Now I know that Bruce is highly touted and can do some big things in the future, but you're giving up a serious slugger with a proven track record. The reason this trade is annoying is because I've gotten a lot of arguments for trying to veto this trade. They are saying that "all trades are a gamble" and "i'm sending the message that only hard numbers and history count". i'm really getting sick of how much people are over-valuing a rookie. Would you pass or veto this trade?

  1. I sympathize with the guy acquiring Jay Bruce.  In my keeper fantasy basketball league, I was trying to rid myself of players from my roster in hopes of acquiring a superstar for next season.  Unfortunately no one was willing to rid themselves of D-Wade, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant for possilbe trade packages that included such players as Chris Bosh, Kirk Hinrich, David West, Monta Ellis,  etc.  So what did I do instead?  My team was already on a sinking ship and rather than trying to hope that some of the veteran players I had would improve, I went ahead and traded veteran playes like a hot Anthony Carter, Monta Ellis, Mehmet Okur, and Paul Pierce and in return, I acquired Kevin Durant, Kwame Brown, Antonio Daniels and Joe Smith.  I said to myself, if I can't get an established superstar, I should go ahead and trade for a future superstud.  Best part, I was able to keep Chris Bosh, David West, and the center everybody wanted Al Horford on my club and those guys are most likely my keepers for the 2008-2009 season.

My league was in an uproar because of it, but the commish saw no reason to veto such trade.  Both of us wanted the trade to go through and both of us depended on this trade for the future of our KEEPER clubs (I was already looking toward next year and needed a guy like Durant to solidify my fantasy foundation for next season.  The other dude was desperately trying to shoot for a late season playoff push).  With Kevin Durant on my club, I have four solid keepers on my team, instead of just three.

Remember, it's a keeper league and those are the type of trades you can expect in keeper leagues.  Owners will have to come to the decision to trade away established stars for the glory of future studs.  Unless it turns out that these two teams are really the same owner (collusion), there's no way you should veto this trade.  Now if someone were to trade Jorge Cantu for Jay Bruce, now that would be a problem, but I've seen more lopsided trades than this and they still went through.  Again, there's no need to veto this one.

  2. Just because it isn't something that you would do isn't a reason to veto a trade. This isn't so unreasonable that it warrants a veto in a keeper league.

  3. The beauty of baseball is that the stats always even out.  When hitters get hot, they always end up evening out the average.  Granderson started the year in similar fasion and he is now hitting around .240.

Personally I would let the trade go.  If the player is dumb enough to give up Dunn for an unproven (he needs more ABs to prove himself) rookie, then let him shoot himself in the foot.  In the end he will realize his error.

  4. Just let it go and don't let it bother you. Dunn may be proven but he strikes out an awful lot and Bruce is a very highly touted Rookie that managers all over fantasy are reaching for

    Just let it go

  5. Does this league have a decent history?  If so, the managers haven't tried to do anything else stupid in the past, I'd let it go.

  6. I would veto.

Jay Bruce is probablly on a hot streak. Also if you look at his game log, he has only played against Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Flordia. Dunn is a proven hitter who is likely to hit 30+ Homers this season.
