I have never taken out annual travel insurance, is there anything I need to look out for, ie any traps that make for a bad policy?

Recommend any good insurance companies?

  1. If you have an existing insurance policy like home or car cover, check to make sure you aren't eligible for further discounts on annual travel insurance with them first.

Otherwise, try price comparison sites like http://www.moneysupermarket.com and http://www.comparethemarket.com and also try specialist travel insurers like Columbus Direct and Flexicover.net. You can find a big list of travel insurers at http://www.uk-insurance-index.co.uk which has an annual travel insurance category.

Like any type of insurance, know what cover you want and read the small print before buying. Specifically, look out for multiple excesses which can mean that you have to pay the first £50 or so on multiple events which should be considered one event.

  2. This site tells you what to look for and tells you how and where to get the best deals

Starting fromas little as £25 a year

  3. instead of paying out for a annual insurance policy a lot of the banks especally HSBC have accounts now called premium accounts  you pay £12.00 per month for it but it comes with free travel insurance for every holiday that you go on, it also has other benefits too if you have a joint account the travel insurance covers both parties which actually works out cheaper than buying an annual policy or taking one out each time you go

  4. It is always worth noting the following points:

    1. What is the maximum length of any one trip?

    2. Is there allowence for Skiing/Extreme Activities at any point

    3. Baggage claim limits

    4. Medical Calim Limits

    5. Do you have any medical problems that need covering?

    6. If you buy a couple or family policy, can they travel independently?

Below are some companies you might want to try - (I have found that the comparison sites not so great for travel insurance when showing cover limits etc...)

  5. If you want a cheap one, try flexicover direct on money supermarket. Paid £40 for an annual polic for me and my partner. OK its not all singing, but hey !
