  1. After an annual blooms and seeds, it produces a chemical that kills the plant.  You can extend the life of an annual by deadheading, cutting off all spent flowers before the seeds can produce that chemical, but it will eventually die.  You might find, though, that it has reseeded in the same location.  Basil and lemon balm are just two of the many herbs that grow easily from last season's seeds.  You can save the seeds from marigolds, among others, and plant them next spring.

  2. If it is a true annual you are probably wasting your time and should just buy another plant.  Some plants are annuals because they can't survive the cold in some areas.  Others are just naturally annuals and will die after one season no matter what you do.

Not knowing where you live or what plant you are referring to I can't be more specific.

  3. Annuals have to be replaced Annually.

some will overwinter inside, many can be rooted in clear containers of water (will grow happily all winter in water only) and replanted next spring.  Begonia, impatiens, geranium, coleus, are just a few.

    experiment, have fun.
