Though its usual for this player, and we have come accustomed to his stellar numbers each year, and simply one of the best of all time, Mariano Rivera just coverted his 28th save. Ok, so he doesnt have as much as K-rod, but no other relief pitcher/closer has a perfect record in saves and chances. hes a perfect 28 for 28! That says alot. It hasnt been often a Pitcher has been MVP, but clearly he has to be in the mix, dont you think? Surely the front runner is, and should be is Hamilton, but K-Rod, Mussina, Maurer, Quentin, and Rivera should be put in the mix. Actually perhaps even MUssina and Rivera could be Cy Young winners along with K-Rod, Lee, Saunders. What are your thoughts, and who might you think is capable of mentioning?

  1. Kinsler! Kinsler! Kinsler!

okay now that i put my opinion on the board i shall reply to yours XD

I've always had and i think always will have a lot of respect for Mariano Rivera. He's having a very good season I think him and Moose (who i also like very much) is keeping the Yankees afloat. I'm not sure about the MVP thing however.

I agree with you in that it shouldn't matter if the team is the best or in the playoffs. I also think that you know pitchers should get MVPs too.. i know that they are somewhat overlooked when it comes to the race which kinda sucks :(

I think Lee's gonna get the Cy.. but Saunders has been doing soo well this season i love him!! So underrated :(

  2. Closers should not get an MVP award for their, at most, one to two inning contribution when their team already has a lead in a situation that is supposed to result in a win. Sure, it's impressive, but if a team is up 5 - 2 in the 9th, they're supposed to win that game. What's more VALUABLE is the people that got them to the 9th with a 5 - 2 lead.

  3. i think he is a definite cy young candidate, but let's face it, josh hamilton has the al mvp in the bag and wrapped up, all he has to do is keep up a decent pace for the rest of the year...however, i think mo is getting overshadowed as an mvp candidate because k-rod is going for the saves record, obviously mo has yet to blow a save and has a better era than k-rod...now, imo k-rod is the most deserving for the mvp if he does break the record, but mo should get more attention than he is

  4. I think he should be.

  5. Throughout years of awarding, we've seen that the MVP is not necessarily given to a player on a winning team. See Dawson for the 87 Cubs and ARod for I don't know when Rangers. They were dead last and each won the MVP because their numbers were so dramatically obscene that none other deserved the award. AS far as Mariano is concerned he is a legitimate candidate for the MVP as is KRod.  But the Yankees like the Rays have been helping collectively to their success on the field. I think Hamilton has had the help of Kinsler and Bradley and that will hurt him but he can still win it. For the Twins it's Morneau, but has Mauer in his team too. The Angels are a team, the best I think. The number one candidate for MVP right now is Hamilton in my opinion. He has killed all pitching this year.

  6. 28 for 28 is a good record for a reliever, however, Gagne was perfect in 2003 with 55 saves, almost twice as much saves that Mariano has, when Gagne won the Cy Young. Unfortunately, I see Lee winning the Cy Young, The Angels may have too many good pitchers that will split the vote in Saunders, Santana and K-Rod. As far as MVP, it may be a 2 person race, Hamilton of the Rangers, or K-Rod, if he breaks the record. A few blown saves can be overlooked when a) you set the single season record in saves and b) you're on the best team in baseball.

  7. I don't think that Hamilton should be MVP, his team isn't even going to make the playoffs! I think if the Yankees make the playoffs it will be Mussina, but if the Twins make the playoffs it should be Morneau.

  8. ok. the MVP is designed for offensive stats, Gold Gloves are designed for feilding stats, Cy Young is for STARTING pitchers, and the Releif award is for relievers and closers. the numbers rivera put up, even though they are great, will not get him the MVP over a player like josh hamilton. and becase he is a closer, he wont evern get the cy young, but he should without a doubt be the front runner for the reliever of the year
