Another Belmont Stakes entrant in the form of Ravelo’s Boy
Korina Stable’s 3-year-old, Ravelo’s Boy has been confirmed to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on 9 June, 2012, over a distance of 1 ½ miles on the Big Sandy’s fast main track.
The conformation came from trainer Manny Azpurua, when Ravelo’s Boy worked on the fast track at Calder Casino & Race Course on the morning of 27 May, 2012, when he turned in seven furlongs in 1 minute and 28 1/5 seconds.
The Lawyer Ron colt was last seen finishing fifth in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby to winner, Prospective, at Tampa Bay Downs on 10 March, 2012, under jockey J. Sanchez.
“He worked just the way I wanted him to,” Azpurua said. “He had a fast work a couple of days ago, so I wanted him to do things easy today. I was so pleased with the way he handled himself and the distance.
“For the first part of the work he was just going along nice and easy. But he finished strong. I got the last half in :48 and change. He had a good gallop out and he came back to the barn in top shape.”
Jockey Jeffrey Sanchez, who has been keeping the mount on Ravelo’s Boy since 3 December, 2011, as the pair raced together four races together without much success, will be replaced by jockey Alex Solis, who flew in from South Florida to work Ravelo’s Boy,
and will secure his mount on the colt for the Belmont Stakes.
“After the work I spoke with Alex and he was really pleased with how the horse went,” Azpurua said. “And he will ride the horse for us in New York. We are happy to get him.”
Out of French Deputy mare Dance Tune, Ravelo’s Boy broke his maiden at the fourth attempt at Calder race course, and was well beaten in his next four starts before finishing the 2011 season on a winning note in a Gulfstream Park’s allowance/optional claimer.
This year Ravelo’s Boy has finished fifth in the Gulfstream Park Derby, fourth in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes, and fifth in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby.
