There has been gossip on the news saying we may enter another cold war. Why the h**l is Russia even in Georgia? Something from back in the cold war? Why is the United States even bothering with this issue? We have a war of our own........And is the UN even doing anything to settle this dispute between Georgia And russia?

Any thoughs/ options?

  1. Russia is in Georgia claiming to secure abandoned weapon caches left by the Georgians.  This after they claimed they were not in Georgia at all.  The unsaid consensus is that Russia is in Georgia to assist Ossetia and Abkhazia in their quest to become independent of Georgia.

The cold war was betwixt the Soviets and the West, not betwixt the unions within Soviet territory.  So, it is tough to say it is due to the cold war.

The UN so far has remained silent as far as I can tell.  At best, judging from past UN actions, all we can hope for from the UN is a few resolutions that they will never act on.

Thought: this is a potentially destabilizing series of events in an area of the world that is already unstable.  However, when a sovereign nation is militarily occupied by another nation, the rest of the world should try and help.

  2. No we wont enter another cold war with Russia, the last cold war was building up arms to show who was the stronger nation.  Russsia is nothing compared to what they used to be, they wouldnt stand a chance.  However I think a cold war would be amazing for our economy.   Since the end of world war II we have been in a military industrial based economy.  because of this we sell most of the worlds leading military weapons and if a major arms race were to arrise like the last cold war that could really stimulate our economy.

  3. another victim of the tv set :)

  4. What makes you think the cold war ever ended?

USA has never stopped their drive to achieve total world domination.

    -----

If the cold war ended in 1991 then why the continuation of missile defence shield development, star wars style weaponization of space, or the constant monitoring of Russian naval exercises.

If anything happened after 1991 and the reorganization of the Soviet Union into the new Russia it was that the cold war actually intensified.

Anyway, I think the cold war was mostly a joke anyhow.

I think USA and USSR used each other in an Orwellian fashion.

At the supposed height of the cold war USA and USSR were co-operating on their space programs and still are. I think it would be very odd to be sharing your highest levels of technology if they were real enemies.
