Another GRE math question ?

m, p, and x are positive integers. mp=x

Column A: m

Column B: x

My answer was D (that there is not enough information to determine their relationship.) I said this because if 'm' and 'p' both equal 1, then the 2 quantities are equal; and under all other conditions, 'x' would be greater than 'm'. Therefore answer is D

The answer given by GRE bible, however, is that Column B is greater. Am I missing something?

  1. You are correct in your analysis.

However...this appears to be a question where either (a) the person writing the question did not consider this possibility; or (b) this is a "answer what I mean to ask and not what I ask" question. In other words, they really *mean* for you to demonstrate that you understand that if two positive integers are multiplied together, then the answer is greater than what you started with.

Either way, it appears to be a poor question.

    Sorry I can't help more.
