I'm sorry for asking all these questions, I just need some extra help.

In a certain class, exactly 2/3 of the students applied for admission to a 4 year college and, of these, 1/8 applied also to a 2 year junior college. If more than one student applied to both 4 year and 2 year colleges, what is the LEAST number of students who could be in this class?

  1. Well, if you have at least one student applying to the 2 yr college, that means that there would be at least 8 students applying to the 4 yr college. And 8 is 2/3 of 12.

    But, since there is more than one student applying to the 2 yr one, then there has to be at least double that, 24. My answer is 24.


  2. There must be at least 24 students.

    More than one would have to be at least 2 students.

    2/3 * 1/8 = 2/24 = 1/12 of the students in the class applied for both.

    1/12 of 24 is 2, which is the least number of students possible, therefore 24 is the minimum number of students there could be.
