when did the roman cathloic church establish the rule of celibacy for the clergy?

  1. I don't know why but they probably did to cut down on costs. It is cheaper to feed a single than a family.


  2. Some would argue that the rule of celibacy existed from day one, per the Bible. There was a movement in the 4th century to push towards celibacy for the clergy. There were attempts in later centuries too, like the Gregorians in the 11c century. However i f you've read AWLOBF you know how well that worked lol. I believe it took the Reformation for the issues to be addressed and eventually led to the Cathoic celibacy rules of today.
