Another Rookie Scott Stallings wins the Greenbrier Classic on PGA Tour
Scott Stallings, another of the fortunate rookies on the PGA tour this year, won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday, July, 31, at the scenic White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
The 26-year-old New Englander kept toiling throughout the weekend and was hardly noticed by many of the audience until he birdied the 18th hole on the final day to push himself into contention for the top slot. The three-way Playoff was contested
between Bill Haas, Bob Estes and Stallings where Stallings went over to birdie the 18th yet again to win his maiden title on the tour.
“I've wanted to do this since I was a little kid,” Stallings said after his stunning success at the Greenbrier Classic.
“I just closed my eyes right before when I was reading the putt and just took a deep breath and visualized the ball going in the hole. After the ball went in I don't really know what happened. It was all a blur,” he spoke of the final birdie on the 18th.
Stallings, who is a management graduate from the Tennessee Tech, has also been writing a blog at BNET.com where he has written almost everything about his engagements over the weekend, including lunch with Jack Nicklaus at the Memorial Tournament and of
his recent losses on the tour. Stallings is the 10th first-timer to win a title in the year and also the sixth rookie to achieve the milestone.
Andres Romero of Argentina and Brendon De Jonge of Zimbabwe were the only non-Americans who made it into the top-ten of the leaderboard, finishing for a joint fourth alongside Jimmy Walker, Gary Woodland, and Cameron Tringale. Kyle Stanley and Webb Simpson
were further down the leaderboard tied for ninth place, trailing the leader by two shots.
Stallings picked up the winner’s prize share of $1,080,000 out of the total purse of $6-million but the precious 500 FedEx Cup points have been more important for the young golfer, as they will go a long way in establishing his status as a permanent player
on the tour for the moment.
