The free milk for kids thing...I was born in '88 so she was about, and I was in little school in '93, when she wasn't. But I remember having free milk at school...I don't get why I did if she got rid of it...

  1. Well looks like you got your answer, local councils paid for it, Labour run local councils that is, any Conservative run Councils wouldn't dare of course.!!

Some one has already mentioned the fact that Maggie was a weirdo to say the least!

I hated her, I still do hate her, she was and still is from another planet, same as all Conservatives.

I think the main thing I recall, (apart from the kids milk):-

During one of the hardest economic times in the UK,she actually said, "The people must learn, if they don't have pennies in their purses, they cant buy sweeties"!!!

Her clowns actually stood up and applauded.

ow many many years later we have another chief clown called Cameron, he can do better than that quote from Maggie.

We have groups of 'hoodies' yobs that roam about in groups intimidate Innocent folk, generally create havoc.

The new chief clown has the aswer to this problem, we should 'Hug a hoodie' they are not getting enough love at home, and need a hug from us all.

I rest my case (for now)!

  2. when i was a student i was a good little socialist, i bought my guardian daily, joined in my sit down protests (until lunchtime obviously) and spouted the usual bullshite about thatcher being evil - but now i realise that this woman stood up to the power of the unions holding the country to ransom, and encouraged competition and value for money through privatisation, which i genuinely believe has been better for the consumer as it cut out the inefficiency and dead wood of nationalistaion

people keep banging on about miners, but again should the taxpayer be expected to subsidise an industry indefinately - most shoppers go to supermarkets because they offer value for money over going to lots of smaller independant retailers - the consequence is that the small shops go out of business, bad for the small shops but good for the consumer - so who is right ?

and i remember the warm milk - it was disgusting and I no longer drink milk - perhaps that is the reason why

  3. The school I went to never got rid of the free milk - they still supply it to my children who attend the same school. The school pays for it from their funding grant although small (unsaleable) pieces of fruit and veg are now given as well in the afternoon.

We started off with tiny milk bottles with straws and moved to cartons which was always served warm at playtime in the mornings.

She got rid of it because she was told to make savings in the education budget.

I also got free school meals but didn't take them - not due to stigma or anything similar it was mainly because they were overpriced c**p!

  4. She was a horrible woman who brought poverty to the lower class. She closed mines, she took away all free milk for kids, she would have took the air we breathed if she though she could save a penny.

  5. margaret thatcher knew that children were given free milk after the war to give them the nourishment they were lacking at home due to rationing. as time went on, rationing stopped ,food at home got better. kids were eating good  food at home and they did not want or need  school milk. most kids didnt like the milk. it was warm and nasty or freezing cold and nasty so she stopped the huge waste of money. the only people that were  upset by the stoppage of school milk were the milkmen.

  6. She / it was the Minister for Education during the Ted Heath government, the answer simple ............ to save money at the expense of children!

    Edit.

Ah, that is also very simple, there was such an outcry that many schools were provided with milk for a while by local and county councils.

  7. It was free for all kids up to the age of year 6 ( 11 ) before she got shut. If I remember rightly the majority of local councils re introduced it to the limit their budgets would allow which was usually infant ( up to year2 ) only.

If you got free milk Kat it was for one of two reasons 1) your local council funded it. 2) you were entitled to free school meals.

Kids now get free fruit up to year 2.( much to the absolute disgust of my son!)

EDIT- How sad is that? Kids entitled to free school meals but won't because of a stigma. The demonisation of the socially disadvantaged lies at the feet of that witch as well...

  8. Please stop posting Thatcher questions as I shudder every time I see that battered old hags name.

  9. Thatcher may well have been vile, but that milk was vilerrrrrrrrr

Ewwwwwwwww at warm milk. It put me off for life. Free fruit is a much better idea.

  10. As another said in an earlier question, it's funny how the mere mention of Maggie's name brings forth such bile and venom form the oh so righteous left wing leaning users on here. I feel sure that if Maggie was alive at the outbreak of the Boer war she would be blamed for that as well.

Well the Labour party haven't exactly covered themselves in glory now, have they? How many of the measures introduced by Maggie, or even Ted Heath have Nu Layber reversed in their eleven years in power? Does the so called socialist government now pay for free milk in schools? Nope, didn't think so.

    One of her best quotes:

"Socialists cry “Power to the people”, and raise the clenched fist as they say it. We all know what they really mean—power over people, power to the State."

  11. She got rid of it because of the cost (as ever).

Frankly, thank God she did. Warm milk left in a playground till 11am still makes me want to barf.

EDIT: I think some councils tried to reintroduce it.

  12. It is true that Mrs Thatcher stopped giving free milk to over 5 year olds. If it was that bad why have the labour party, who have been in power for many years never bothered to reinstate the decision ? Perhaps they agree with her ?

  13. stop having a dig at maggy she did do some things wrong but im working class but she also got a lot of people off there arses and had more balls than anyone since, compare her to tony line my pockets blair or brown the ciown.
