Question:

Another Thrush Question?

Okay, first of all thank you to all who answered my last question. Until I can get a vet out to look at everything - (before you start telling me about getting a vet out and all that stuff, yes I am trying. my mom has agreed to call them in a week if what's going on isn't getting better, and that's all that I am going to get right now) - I would like to know your opinion.

I looked up some articles and things about using iodine and bleach and I don't want to use that right now unless the vet tells me to. Anyways I think I'm going to try some sugardine (look it up if you don't know it is) because it sounds pretty effective.

I'm also thinking of ordering Absorbine Thrush Remedy (here: http://www.thegiftedhorse.com/absorbine-thrush-remedy-p-2285.html) because I've used Absorbine hoof/care products before and they work very well. The products also claims to NOT stain/dry out the hoof which is what Thrush Buster has done to my horse's hoof (it has turned his hooves purple/black).

Anybody used these products? Again, I'm going to get a vet out but I need to show my mom that I am trying to get rid of it and if it's nothing is working she'll call the vet...so I might as well keep trying.

Thanks in advance :)

  1. My Husband is a Professional Horse Farrier and I usually clean my Mares stall twice daily, and put her out in pasture, while the stall is drying out. Plus, I feed my horses hoofs from inside out. Sho-Hoof Supplement is great! With your regular daily grooming. As long as you keep those hoofs away from mud and manure they should be fine. And I have used Absorbine, it is great! But most hoof problems can be solved by dally maintenance.

    Good luck to you.

  2. Ok, so here's my take on thrush remedies:

Thrush Buster works pretty well. Yes, it turns your horse's feet purple, but it's the bottom of his foot, so who cares? You usually have to use it three or four times to initially take care of the thrush, then once or twice a week to keep the thrush away

Absorbine Thrush Remedy does not work as well as Thrush Buster. It takes more treatments to work and you have to use it more often.

My home remedy that works SOOOO well. . . has never failed to treat thrush in ONE treatment, and I only use it again IF an when the thrush returns (not weekly like Thrush Buster). And it's going to turn your horse's feet red/orange like iodine, but it usually fades away within 24 hours.

    1 part formaldehyde

    2 parts water

    3 parts iodine

Be careful not to inhale the fumes from this though - formaldehyde is not happy stuff when inhaled, but it is harmless to your horse's feet. Farrier approved :)

EDIT: person below me - Kopertox is great, works well, but it will turn your horse's feet green for several days :)

  3. Well, I have always used a bleach solution to treat thrush...no need to go out & spend big bucks on special products when bleach does just fine.  Just put it in a spray bottle, hose out your horse's hoof/ hooves that have thrush, and spray the bleach in, you may want to dilute it, but find a recipe online, their should be a few home remedies...I forget what my family uses...my Dad makes it & puts it in a jug whenever we need it...If it doesnt clear up after a few days of bleach, def. call the vet, like your mom is going to do :) Thrush is a fungus, bleach will kill it, your vet will probably prescribe an anti-fungal soak for the hoof/hooves.

    Good Luck!

  4. I didn't see your first question so I'm in on this late.  What you need is a competent farrier....no product will make up for the negligence of a bad farrier.  I'm glad you are rejecting the advice to use bleach, etc. and at least are going with a product formulated with some knowledge of hoof substance.  Good farriers recommend exact and good treatments....not "yeah, go ahead and try that" treatments.  Please keep looking for a decent farrier.

  5. I always use this

Works well on race horses, quick too.
