Another ankle injury for Cleveland Browns quarterbacks
When both Cleveland Browns quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace sprained their ankles early in the season, it gave rookie Colt McCoy the opportunity to show coach Eric Mangini what he could do.
McCoy has responded well since taking over, leading the team to wins over the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots. Coming out of the Browns' most recent 24-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday 21 November, McCoy, like Delhomme and Wallace
before him, is now suffering from an ankle sprain.
Despite the injury, McCoy stayed in the game and x-rays came back negative, although he will return to Cleveland to undergo further tests and be re-evaluated.
"I wasn't going to come out of the game," McCoy told reporters after the game. "We evaluated it and it hurt, but it wasn't something that I was going to pull myself out of the game over. I felt like I could still do the things I needed to do. It was bothering
me, but I needed to be out there."
McCoy picked up in the injury when he was sacked early in the third quarter by Jeremy Mincey. "It definitely bothered him and I talked to him throughout the course of the game," Mangini said. "And at one point I had Seneca warm up."
At one point in the fourth quarter, McCoy scrambled out of the pocket for an 18-yard gain before being pushed out of bounds. McCoy returned to the huddle afterwards, jogging gingerly back onto the field. McCoy was sacked for a season-high six times on the
day.
Despite suffering the injury and losing the game, McCoy was happy with the way his team fought for the entire game. "If you want to take anything positive out of this, we fought up to the very end," McCoy said. "Just because things weren't going well for
us, we didn't hang our heads. We kept fighting and trying, down to the very last play."
