Another awesome performance expected from Awesome Maria in the Rampart Stakes
After defeating the 3-year-old 2011 champion filly, Royal Delta, in the Grade 3 Sabin Stakes, Awesome Maria, was making her seasonal debut then, but now she is a 5-year-old now, and will be looking to keep the feel good factor going through the whole of
2012, hoped to be an injury free season as she takes 5 others in the Grade 3. $150,000 Rampart Stakes at about 1 1/8 miles on dirt for 4-year-old and above fillies and mares on 31 March, 2012, at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Todd Pletcher for E. Paul Robsham Stables, Awesome Maria went undefeated last year, but missed a good chunk of the season with a condylar fracture she sustained when she was training for the Grade 1 Ruffian Invitational at Saratoga.
Though she was headed for an Eclipse Award when she defeated all rivals in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap at about 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park last June, where she succeeded over Payton d’Oro and Super Espresso, who finished second and third, respectively,
while Awesome Maria romped to down the distance in 1 minute and 41.40 seconds.
She won the Grade 3 Sabin Stakes last year as well, went on to win the Grade 3 Rampart Stakes too, which she is vying for this year as well.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Maria’s Mon, out of mare Discreetly Awesome by Awesome Again, Awesome Maria proved her fitness when she defeated Royal Delta in the Grade 3 Sabin Stakes, while carrying top weight of 123 pounds.
“Her first start back was encouraging. She certainly hasn’t lost a step,” said Pletcher. “We were really pleased with that effort. She was coming off a long layoff. She might even improve for the Rampart.”
Awesome Maria returned in the Sabin Stakes after an eight month layoff, and to win the first race she was pointed at was doing something and that too against the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic winner.
The gray/roan mare will be mounted by John Velazquez again, as the 5-year-old mare will break from post number 5 in a field of 6 for trainer Todd Pletcher.
