Beginning of a Dream
With an easy mind I went to sleep
While the cat beside me her watch did keep
Not curled up on me in her usual place
To purr and nuzzle and kiss my face
But carefully guarding as sentinel
While soft night hours so gently fell.
All night through the waking dreams
Shined within me in brilliant gleams
Taking me over the world so wide
Showing each moment an angel beside
Patiently watching as silent guide
Never alone in trouble or victory'
My single made double,
Someone was with me.
I learned how some who with me walked
Through h**l had walked with others
In trials they never balked
For children without mothers
Facing death camps patiently
Children they held, led to safety.
I never understood the German they spoke
When at last I learned, my heart it broke,
That old nun in a garret so quietly sewing
Indeed was an angel without my knowing.
The teacher I had for high school German
Her last name the Estonian version of my own
Taught me much more than German
There was so much to be known
Teaching me history went with our name
Responsibility in both glory and shame.
Honour greater than patriotism
Generals faced death to end Nazism.
These angels father gave me with his name
Although he died, they are with me the same.
