Another boy choked my brother during their school recess today. How do I properly alert the authorities?

My younger brother (fifth grade) was choked at school today, during recess. Apparently, with no provocation, a boy grabbed his neck. My brother unsuccessfully attempted to pry his fingers away, and the boy responded by squeezing his hands together and pressing directly on his adam's apple. He let go, and my brother immediately reported the incident to his classroom teacher (also the other boy's teacher). The boy was sent to the principal's office and was temporarily suspended from school. My parents intend to speak with the principal tomorrow in hopes of better understanding the situation. The boy is clearly a trouble-maker, for he'd already been suspended six times. Nobody in my family is not really sure what we want - expulsion? However, I'd like to know from someone has had the experience - what's the next step? Is there a certain report to file? And should we seek more punishment? Thanks!

  1. If you are not satisfied with the principal's ruling, file a grievance, at which time the school will launch an investigation. You can also file charges on the choker, as that is assault.

  2. Expulsion might be a little much,  although I know he's a trouble maker.  I might make such a big stink about it though that child would never be able to go to recess again.  It's better punishment than suspension.  If he can't behave then he doesn't get to go ruin others people fun.  That's just not fair.

  3. Let the school handle it first.  They have dealt with this type of thing before.  I'm sure the school will be in touch with your parents.  Parents don't get a say in how a child is punished at school.  Usually the school has protocol for what a child's punishment is (for example he may have to apologize to your bro and get 2 day suspension.)  Just wait and see what your parents hear from the principal.  I hope your borther is okay.

  4. If you don't get the response you feel you deserve, go to the school board.  They will get results.  My daughter came home with a small hickey on her neck in first grade.  I was pissed!!! A boy back her into a corner...It took going to the school board to get results!  Try that.

  5. This is not bullying; this is assault.  Assault is handled by the police department.  Your parents need to call the police and file assault charges against the other boy.

They also need to make sure your brother is not in danger from this kid.  If the school does not expel the attacker, your parents need to remove your brother from school.

  6. being suspended is all we know, not enough! That is abusing your son and you should press charges against the parents. Im sorry that you and your son, have to go through this......... Please take this answer into mind.

    ;D :)
