the forever green nursery owns 700 white pine trees. each year the nursery plans to sell 12% of its trees and plant 60 new ones. Bowen thinks that the trees will never run out but Gerri thinks thy will

who is right. explain the answer

  2. 12% is over 70 trees so by planting only 60 to replace your losing 10 trees each year so yes you will eventually run out.

  3. 700X.12= 84 trees each year

                     -60= 24 trees lost each year=

    700/24= 29.1666 years to run out.

  4. They won't run out.  

    The nursery will sell fewer trees each year until they have a total of 500 trees.  At that point, they will sell 60 trees (12% of 500) and plan 60 new ones.

    Bowen is correct.  Once you sale down to 500 trees, you stop losing a net amount of trees by planting 60 new ones (ie 500*0.12 = 60)

    x0 = 700 where x0=initial amount of trees

    xn = ∑ 0.88*x(n-1) + 60

    ......n=1

    x(n-1) = previous amount of trees

    xn = current amount of trees after the sale
