Another disappointing end to Phil Mickelson’s US Open
At this year’s US Open, so much was expected from Phil Mickelson but results were not delivered. The five time runner-up of the US Open had only to blame himself for the poor performance which he came up with.
Before the start of the tournament, lefty was not in good shape, his form has been declining if we look at the past few tournaments.
The Olympic Club, where there were lush green fairways and extremely smooth greens, one had to be in the perfect shape to challenge the rest.
Phil Mickelson opened with a 76, which meant that he was already six over but the disappointing thing was that he could not carry on from there. Moreover, his performance declined as the tournament moved on.
Fans were also expecting a commanding performance from their star but he could not deliver. On the 18th hole, on Saturday, fans gave Mickelson a serenade as he turned 42.
Lefty himself acknowledged that he did not come up with the goods that were needed to nail the championship. He claimed that one had to be in the perfect shape to perform well in such big events.
However, he praised the management and the US Golf Association in the way the tournament was organized and the quality of golf course as well.
In such high standard of golf courses, a player of Phil Mickelson’s caliber must do well in these conditions, as it is in such events where the skill and temperament of a player counts.
After the first day’s performance, he should have lifted himself but he could not, which is not an encouraging sign for himself.
At the end, here is what he had to say, "If you played anything less than perfect golf, it was extremely penalizing, and I played far from perfect."
Mickleson ended with a final round on 78 but the worst thing is that it did not include a single birdie. This was probably Mickelson’s worst US Open campaign, as he ended up tied at 65 with an over par of +16. He needs to improve quickly if he has to go up in the rankings.
