Question:

Another frame of mind, your comments on this poem of mine?

Masterpiece

In the garage sale there it was

An awful painting on black velvet

But that was not what I saw

It was the frame that held it

A marvelous piece of Spanish Baroque

How could I bargain when

They thought the painting a masterpiece?

Its garish Elvis nothing but a joke

But how could I get the masterpiece

Without what it contained?

I brushed the paint, it flaked

I offeredcompensation

But they thought restoration

I remarked how good it might look

In its original frame, which clearly this was not

And paying them for that and the price

Of someone to repaint

I claimed the frame as my part of the bargain.

  1. Sometimes, you just have to take the whole thing...you never know what may be hidden behind the Elvis. It may be worth more than even the frame
