Question:

Another homeschooling Question?? Regarding age?!?

Does it matter what age a child is to start homeschooling?

I am 16 years old, a junior in highschool... well, because of some circumstances last year... I am still technically a sophmore.... [sadly]....

So is it too late for me?

I am much better in classes like A.P. (Advanced placement) and C.N. (College Now) where I can work on my own, independantly, rather than in regular classes where we sit in front of a speaking teacher for 45 mins without seriously getting anything done...

I appreciate your help!

  1. I started when I was 14. You can start whenever you want.

  2. You sound like me in high school :-)  I loved the AP classes, but was bored out of my mind in the regular classes; because of that, I did fairly poorly in the regular ones and had a hard time getting into AP.

Yes, you can homeschool.  You can study for CLEP, AP, and any other advanced courses you'd like.  New York does have fairly stringent rules, but it's not impossible.  It just takes more paperwork.

Here's a link to the laws and regs for NY; I would highly suggest getting in touch with a homeschool group in your area, as they can help you and your parents with any questions.  http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?St...

Hope that helps!  Good luck :-)

  3. Are you sure you want to start now, when you only have this year and next before you go to college? Try to take as many AP and CN classes as you can because those challenge you and make you have an interest in those subjects. besides, it is always easier to transition from high school to college than homeschool to college. if you arent being challenged enough, your teacher can help if you ask them. they could give you extra if you want or tehy could tell you to research more in depth. also, asking questions during class keeps you and your classmates interested.

    hope i helped

  4. We have friends that home-schooled starting at age 12 and under.  They started AP courses at home starting at age 15 or so and then took the test at the local high school.  You can do that too.

Many students withdraw from the public system and continue their education at home for high school.  It is never too late.

You can study for AP, CLEP, PSAT and SAT all from home.  As long as you are diligent and stick to a plan -- study for anywhere from 4 to 6 hours every day.  This will improve your chances of doing very well on the tests.  Colleges LOVE high scores.  Strive for the highest that you can possibly get.  What you don't achieve in the next two years or so will be available to you in community colleges.

We know many students that have gone to college directly from home-schools.  They have NO problem in transitioning into the college classes.  None whatsoever.

Our daughter is one example.  She home-schooled for all 13 years (including K) and gets high grades at college.  It is because she knows how to study and how to get her work done without being distracted by all of the social interferences.
