Another lay day called at Volcom Fiji Pro due to low swell at Cloudbreak
Volcom Fiji Pro remained on hold for the third consecutive day on Thursday, June 7, due to unfavourable conditions prevailing at the primary event site of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji.
Matt Wilson, the Event Director of the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, conceded that the decision to call yet another lay day was taken after assessing the conditions at the main venue.
There had not been any significant improvement in the condition on Thursday and thus it was deemed unsuitable to resume the competition with so little on offer.
“Very little on offer out there today so we’ve called a lay day,” Wilson said. “Swell models are still indicating a significant system to move in tomorrow and peak tomorrow night with waves throughout the weekend. We’ll be back tomorrow to assess conditions..”
The decision was taken in best interest of the latest stop on the elite tour, with the intended motivation of ensuring the fans could witness the world’s best surfers unloading their exquisite skills in high-performance waves instead of directing their focus
on holding their own in demanding surfing conditions.
The official forecaster of Volcom Fiji Pro, Surfline, has called for a massive swell approaching the open ocean reef pass of Cloudbreak and will reach the event site on Friday. The swell will not only be of significant size, but will also stay there for
considerable period, which will consequently help in the smooth running of the competition and excitement in the battles between the ASP Top 34.
The latest event on the elite tour got done with 22 heats during its first two days, which included the 12 heats of Round 1 and 10 heats of Round 2. The battles turned out to be as intense as ever, featuring plenty of exquisite performances and handful of
upsets, including an early relegation of the 11-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater and Australian sensation Taj Burrow.
The event organisers will reconvene at Cloudbreak on Friday morning to assess the conditions and possibly get started with the remaining Round 2 heats by 8:30 am.
