Question:

Another lease termination question?

I was just reading that I should include in the term. letter what I intend to do with the utilities (transfer them back to the landlord or have them shut off). I have not even called my landlords to tell them we're moving, and the letter needs to be sent by tomorrow. Is one of these options just customary or should I be calling and asking them this question (as I said in my previous question, they're out of town after a funeral, working out the details of a will, and not in a civil manner so I don't want to bother them with details). Should I just transfer the utilities to my new place and not include it in the letter? Thanks.

  1. With your letter to move you are giving your landlord plenty of time to arrange to have the utilities transferred into their name.

You cannot transfer the utlities into their name for them.

If you want to be nice you could state that you are moving out on the 1st of the month and having the utilities terminated on the 2nd of the month.

    Hope this helps!~

  2. Don't include it in your letter. You would normally terminate the utilities when you move out and open an account for the new place.

The landlord should expect you to do this.
