lets just say if I was coming to a stop sign or stop light and I was on the 4th or 5th gear can I pull in the clutch and and just shift all the way down to 1st gear or neutral or do I have to pull in the clutch and down shift to 4th gear then release it slowly and repeat until you get to 1st or neutral cause I would prefer to pull in the clutch and down shift all the way down to 1st or neutral.

I dont have a motorcycle yet so I realy dont know please help and I hope you understand my question thank you.

  1. you can just pull in the clutch and shift it down to 1st or neutral if your coming up to a stop light or sign

  2. You don't 'have to' shift from gear to gear, but the

situation you give indicates poor planning.

What are you doing in the wrong gear for your speed?

If you had to react fast, a burst of speed would not be an option.

Try to be in the habit of always being in the proper gear.

It will save your bacon sooner or later.

  3. Pull the clutch in and shift all the way down to 1st. Remember that your clutch will not let you shift into first easily unless your at a lower engine and bike speed.

  4. Since you have laid out this scenario, I need to help you clarify first of all; while downshifting, you will NEED to engage the next lower gear and RELEASE the shift lever to allow the transmission detent to engage BEFORE you engage the next lower gear.

    Start the process by:

You will apply BOTH brakes smoothly, while BOTH brakes are applied, squeeze in the clutch and downshift, ease out the clutch and allow the engine to help decelerate the rear wheel.

Shifting is a function that you will be using to match engine speed to road speed and vice-versa. This should all be done smoothly. Practice, practice , practice.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

  5. Yes you can. Although its better to downshift through every gear until u come to a stop, if a sudden situation causes you to break harder than necessary, yes you can do that. Ive had it happen a few times when people cut me off and I had no time to downshift.

  6. There are basically two methods of coming to a stop. You can perform what is called engine braking or you can use conventional braking. Engine braking is when you downshift through the gears but allow the gears to engage briefly to slow the bike. In this case you would go from 5th to 4th, letting the clutch out the bike will slow as RPM decline, then from 4th to 3rd and so on. People do this to spare the brake pads. It uses more gas but it spares the pads. I do it if I know my pads are low and I need to save them till my next payday or something.

The second method is just pulling in the clutch and using the brakes to slow down while you coast. Most bikes won't allow you all the way into 1st gear if you're above 25MPH. I wouldn't want to go all the way down anyway in case traffic starts moving again or I need to use some evasive manuevers to avoid an accident.

The more you ride, you'll develop your own style of a combination of engine and conventional braking.

  7. when the clutch is pulled in, you can shift in and out of any gear you would like.  you should be down shifting as you approach the stop sign. this way you leave in 1st, and dont stall in a higher gear.

  8. Thats not how to shift a bike!

Correct gear for the correct speed.

Learn how to shift correctly, or go drive a car.

  9. no dramas at all don't race it through though. The best way is to gear back one at a time so that way if you need to accelerate you can most riders blip back one at a time(that is they apply a little throttle when the clutch is in before you kick down a gear.

Hope this help you if your new to motorcycles do a course first then find a road with no traffic use a guide post to stop at

this will also let you practise cornering and braking

best of luck but take it easy
