Another perfect day for golf at Transitions Championship sees Chris Couch take the lead and Sergio Garcia bounce back
It was yet another perfect day for golf at the Copperhead Golf Course as the unusually calm weather continued into the second day. The day’s honours belonged to Chris Couch and Brandt Snedeker who both shot the day’s lowest score of 64. Sergio Garcia, making his return to the PGA Tour after seven months, also had a splendid second day as he shot a 66 to match his first round score of 68.
Couch has been playing for the last two years on the PGA Tour on medical extension ever since sustaining a shoulder injury in 2008. This season too he is suffering tendonitis, but still managed to play some of the best golf in his life.
“I feel like I'm good enough to win and I've been playing well enough this year and last year to win," Couch said. "And you know it's just hard to come back from an injury.”
Garret Willis, who was tied for second yesterday, now leads the pack along with Couch. The American shot a 67 to match his excellent 66 in the first round. He would do well to make sure not to repeat his last years performance at the Copperhead, where he squandered his first round lead after scoring a disastrous 77 and missed the cut.
All eyes were on Sergio Garcia however. The Spaniard, touted as one of the next big players in golf when he started playing, has been out of form for two years now. The former World No.2 has not had a win since the HSBC Champions in 2008, and has been on a hiatus from golf for most of the last season. This time around he’s pulling out all the stops to make sure he doesn’t become another Tiger Woods though.
He added another flawless round to his bogey free first and made five birdies on his way to the 66. This place him tied for second place and one just one shot off the lead. He insists he’s playing just to regain his confidence and not for the win. “Just keep trying to do the right things and see where we finish”, he added.
First round leader Paul Casey had a terrible second round after leading the field in the first round. The English golfer started with three bogeys and finished with a level par score of 71. He’s still only two shots off the lead and his form is good so don’t write him off just yet.
World No. 1 Martin Kaymer is five shots off the lead after shooting a second round score of one under par 70. Coupled with his first round of score 68 this puts him on four under par along with seven other golfers, including Nick Watney. The winner of last week’s WGC Cadillac Championship also had a disappointing second day, managing a one over par 72.
