Another playoff failure for Atlanta Falcons – NFL Season Review (Part III)
Continued from part II...
Against Carolina Panthers
The defeat against the Green Bay Packers did not let Falcons down and when they hosted Carolina Panthers in the next encounter, they were a different unit altogether, especially in the final quarter of the game.
Panthers and Falcons went almost neck and neck in the first three quarters of the game, but the latter dominated the final quarter to get their third victory of the season.
In the first quarter, Panthers scored the first scoring move of the game in the form of a field goal. Falcons managed to get the lead towards the end of the quarter by scoring a touchdown.
Both teams got a touchdown apiece in the second quarter and Panthers got another touchdown in the third quarter to once again take the lead, 17-14.
In the final quarter, however, Falcons scored a field goal and two touchdowns without conceding any point and won the game. The final score settled at 31-17.
At Detroit
Falcons were gradually finding their rhythm and when they travelled to play the aggressive Detroit Lions, they won their second straight game to initiate the much-needed winning streak.
Falcons’ coach, Mike Smith, said after the win:
"Good teams go on streaks. You can't just keep yo-yoing up and down."
Lions scored a field goal in the first quarter to take the lead, but Falcons scored a field goal and a touchdown in the same quarter to get ahead.
In the second quarter, Lions managed to score a field goal, but Falcons added another touchdown to increase the lead.
Lions got 10 points in the third quarter as they scored a field goal and a touchdown, but were still unable to come close as Falcons also got a field goal in the quarter.
Falcons increased their lead in the final quarter and scored a field goal, which became the final scoring move of the game. The final score settled at 23-16.
At Indianapolis
After winning two straight games and enjoying a bye week the morale of Falcons’ players was high.
Fortunately, their next encounter was scheduled against the lowly Indianapolis Colts, who had not won any game in the season apparently because of the absence of their veteran quarterback, Peyton Manning, who had not played any game owing to a neck injury.
Colts continued with their struggle against Falcons as well and the Falcons did not face any serious trouble in getting their third straight win.
Falcons’ quarterback, Matt Ryan, was brilliant in the game as he completed 14 of his 24 attempted passes for 275 yards while throwing three touchdowns and only one interception. He received a quarterback rating of 120.7 for the game.
In the first quarter, Falcons scored a touchdown at the start and added another near the end.
Falcons took their score to 21 by scoring another touchdown in the second quarter in which Colts later got their only scoring move of the game in the form of a touchdown.
Falcons got another touchdown in the third quarter and they added a field goal in the final quarter to win the game. The final score settled at 31-7.
After playing eight games, Falcons were had won five games losing three.
The loss took Colts’ losing streak to nine games.
