  1. You always have to have the contacts clean in order for the electrical current to operate. Make sure you wipe gently, but firmly the metal area on the battery and the charger and also make sure it's clean in the camera---you may need to use a Q-tip to get in there.

Also, rechargable batteries can only last so long--not for life. If you charge & re-charge a lot it will wear it out faster. You might need a new battery overall.

Make sure the charger is well plugged in.

If everything fails after this go to an electronics store with the charger, camera & battery and have them check it by using one of their charged batteries. You may have to replace the battery or charger, so be prepared.

    Good luck!

  2. Do you have alkaline batteries or a lithium battery? If you have the latter, according to my digital camera's book, the 2 metal things can become dirty and simply need wiping with a clean, non-chemical, dry smooth cloth. If that doesn't do the trick my guess is that the battery needs replacing. When charging, I always leave my battery in the charger until it is completely done charging and the light on the charger goes off. How often you have to charge depends on how often you use your camera. I use mine about once a week, so I charge it about as often.

  3. You wrote that the charging light stays on only for a few seconds. I fear that the battery has a failure and it needs to be replaced.

Maybe you can test it in the shop before buying if it is really the battery.
