I've seen some where it says you dont have to use a box spring..and some that say you do need to..or the recommend using one. how does that work? could you use only a mattress on any one..if you wanted..could you use a box spring on one even if it says you dont need one? thanks.

  1. A lot depends on the construction of the platform bed upon which you want to put the mattress and/or box spring.  If the platform bed is constructed with a solid plywood or MDF base under which the mattress rests, it is not necessary to use a box spring.  Of course, that doesn't mean that you cannot put a box spring foundation under your mattress if you wanted to.  Some platform beds do not have the support fully top to bottom and side to side.  The mattress either rests on side rails or a series of slats and in these cases you need a foundation or box spring.  However, you can also add a piece of plywood or MDF that rests like a box spring does on the side rails or slats which does enable you to forego the box spring.  Hope that explains it.
