I am trying to locate infomation on my biological birth mother who game me up for adoption when i was a couple years old. i was born february 1989 in MN. i was soon put up for adoption. and was finally taken home by my adoptive parents that august. all has been fine and dandy but i still wonder WHO my biological mother was. it was a closed adoption meansing is was blocked from getting any useful infomation that could aid me in the search. all i have is her birthday, appearance, some interests her religion and heritage and also what she wanted for me. there was no name given and on my certificate my name was marked as ******************** as well as hers.this adoption wasnt done through an agency but rather the state. so anybody who wwas going to say contact the agency i cant. also i dont want any ridiculous answers like hiring a private investigator or going on a talk show. i have attempted gain infomation on sites dedicated to infomation but nothing has surfaced. thanks alot everybody.

  1. Have you tried applying to the  Court where the adoption was finalized for a copy of the Order of Adoption (doing this is free).    Have you been to the court and asked for the old appearance records (which should be public record)  Failing this then petition the court formally for access to your records citing the fact that you are entitled to your Original Birth Certificate but that it does not contain all the complete information regarding your birth and therefore you require copies of your adoption records from the Court and the State.

I see you are still not registered with online reunion registries - you need to put yourself out there to be found too, if you are serious about finding.

I can't understand why they blanked out your name and your mothers name on the Original Birth Certificate -  you should be entitled to an unadulterated copy if you were born in MN in '89.  I'd be inclined to apply for another one and see what you get.

If you want answers you will have to get stuck in and put the effort into finding them.

  2. The first place to start is by contacting the state of Minnesota!

    http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/chs/o...

To request a copy of your original birth certificate "If a birth parent has given permission to release the original birth information to the child, MDH will send the child a non-certified copy of the original birth record."

    http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/chs/o...

Make sure to include an authorization to release your information should a birth relative wish to contact you!

"At this time the Commissioner of Human Services will attempt to locate the natural parents to obtain consent to release the original birth certificate. If each natural parent is located and consents are given, the original birth certificate will be released.

If the adoption was finalized on or after August 1, 1977, then the original birth certificate will be released to the adopted adult if the natural parents have not filed an access veto."

If you haven't yet, register the information you have with the International Soundex Reunion Registry?  http://www.isrr.net/

Another search site available for Minnesota.

Keep copies of every letter or e-mail you send in a binder along with a copy of each response. The binder will provide you with a road map of where you've searched & what your next step might be.

Look in your local library for "The Adoption Search Book" by Mary Jo Rillera.

If you'd like, e-mail me. With a few more details, I might be able to help you with your next few steps!

ETA: Try the state, but don't accept "No" as an answer and don't give up! Some mediators seem to have an agenda (not all!) when it comes to assisting adoptees in finding.

I was a foster child, so the Dept. of Social Svcs handled my adoption.  Good luck!

  3. I was adopted in '78 in Michigan by an agency, so my situation was i'm sure a little different. But it was a closed adoption, so it wasn't until I was 18 that I could petition for more info - it was actually my birth mother who contacted them to find me, and they contacted me through a court or agency mediator. I wonder if there is something similar that the state can do,  if they still have those records, maybe they have some kind of mediator like the agencies have through the court system.

I also found this site online, which isn't a well-made site but you might be able to contact other adoptees in MN t o see if they have any other info.
